Background of the Study
Business model innovation (BMI) refers to the process of rethinking how businesses create, deliver, and capture value. Start-ups, which often operate in uncertain environments, rely heavily on innovative business models to differentiate themselves and remain competitive (Oluwasegun & Hassan, 2023). In regions like Zamfara State, where start-ups face unique challenges such as limited funding, market instability, and infrastructural gaps, BMI can be a critical driver of survival and growth.
Studies by Adamu and Yusuf (2024) emphasize that start-ups with flexible and innovative business models are more likely to adapt to changing market conditions and withstand external shocks. In Zamfara State, however, many start-ups lack the resources and knowledge required to implement BMI effectively, limiting their potential for long-term success.
This study examines the relationship between business model innovation and start-up survival in Zamfara State, identifying the key factors that influence their success.
Statement of the Problem
Many start-ups in Zamfara State struggle to survive beyond their initial stages due to ineffective business models that fail to address market needs. Challenges such as resource constraints, lack of customer insights, and limited adaptability hinder their ability to compete.
Research by Bello and Abdullahi (2023) indicates that while BMI can enhance start-up survival, its application in Zamfara State is limited due to a lack of awareness and support systems. This study addresses this problem by exploring the role of BMI in start-up survival and offering practical recommendations for improvement.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on start-ups in Zamfara State, examining the role of BMI in their survival. It does not include large businesses or start-ups outside Zamfara State. Limitations include the diversity of industries and the varying levels of BMI application among start-ups.
